Farm Trade & Sustainability | All kava is sustainably grown and harvested without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The farms are small, ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand plants. Small trees are cleared to create farms, while the large trees that support the soil are preserved and used for shade, as kava thrives better in shaded conditions. Constant crop rotation is practiced to ensure that the roots never rot or degrade in quality due to over-farming. Some parts of the kava farms may sit dormant for several years, allowing the soil to regenerate and prepare for the conditions needed for organic kava to flourish. Instead of using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, crop rotation and field hiatus are utilized. Most importantly, traditional farming methods handed down through generations are preserved, while also incorporating the newest and safest organic farming techniques. |
